There are two bath rooms, and we have a separate study and guest room!

Compare the pictures for change in living room space.

2 New address, phone number

If you are in the area: we live at South 6 Street, block 11, apartment 204

Cell phone has not changed; our home phone number is now: (86) 757-263-94947

3 Holidays

From Jan. 28 through Feb. 19 we are in Yunnan province: Kunming, Liu Ku, Pi He, and Zi Zhi Lou (?)

We are not so accessible then (emergency cell: (86) 15917-023570

Bao mo Garden Visit

This week most of the staff has started their holidays. Marioka also is done her obligations. One of my classes, however, writes their final test next Monday. I still have to teach three half days this week. The last two classes I have promised them to watch a movie: “The Shawshank Redemption”. They changed the time table four or five times over the last week, but I stuck to my formerly promised Tuesday and Thursday off. So, on Tuesday we visited a park in the area. We took four different buses, which costed us about 75 cents per person. I was checking my maps to find out where we were and where we might end up. The park fee was only $4 p.p. It just got sunny when we got there, so we no longer needed to wear our jackets. It was interesting. I loved the fantastic reliefs and architecture. I took a few good shots, I think.

Actually, as we are short of income over the summer, we may be selecting the best 10-20 prints and framing them as single, signed editions by silent auction. (You think it might be OK to do one series for Canada and a similar series for Holland later?) So far, I may have about a dozen shots (out of 600 or so) that may be close enough to perfection to qualify.

19 Voorsmaak van de Vakantie

Mededelingen
1 Verhuisd

Eind maart krijgen we onze eerste gasten!

Ons telefoon nummer is nu: (86) 757-263-94947

3 Vakantie

19 - Foretaste of Spring Pictures

This time though we visited a clean Cantonese restaurant. Free soup is served first. Also green tea is standard. (You first clean your bowl and little saucer and chop sticks with the tea. Throw that tea in a container and then drink the new tea as an appetiser) There are plenty of waitresses everywhere and they will see every move you make. You have to get used to that.

Earlier we walked a bit around and saw some older apartment buildings and an old but still used toilet building. You really have to go before you would use that…

The chickens and the clementine ‘orchard’ are are not far from where we live. The clementines shrubs are all potted up in big glazed clay pots, and standing on a field.

During one of our trips to the big city of Guangzhou (we visited IKEA recently) we came upon those musicians. They were playing with heart and soul.

In all the business and pollution of the big city you still can find some nice blooming trees and shrubs. (For us still amazing at this time of year!)

The big Christmas tree is at a little trafic circle by the bus station in front of the main gate of Country Garden, where we live. All the little local busses and bigger busses go around on that circle but some other cars don’t have the patients to go around and just go against the trafic. That is pretty normal here. I compare it sometimes with the behaviour of bicyclists in Holland, who just do what they please.)

In the background the main gate. Along the roads they decorate with every different occasion. Country Garden has his own security system. You need a pass to get in and if you visit you cannot use the little bus unless you are picked up by a inhabitant of Country Garden.

Xinnian kuai le
Marioka en Aize

Apologies

Hi, this is Art. Therefore, schools and banks were open, while buses ran on their reduced weekday schedules. On the other hand, public institutions are closed for the rest of the week.

It is China Week, and we have holidays! Monday especially was a day of celebration, so we got the “Tokyo treatment” at Tiyu Xilu metro station. At least you could not fall over if you could not reach a metal post or bar to hang on to.

Anyway, we formed a motley crew as (red-haired) Andrew Kuiper, (Harry Potter look alike) Jesse, and (white haired “parents”) Marioka and (Einstein-look-alike) Aize spent the day in gigapolis Guangzhou.

We first battled the masses at the Bookcenter to get a character-dictionary for Andrew. Outside I glanced somewhat interested at a street vendor, selling worldmaps with America pushed to the margins. I ended up bargaining for an English-language wallmap of China. The “no-English” youngster showed me 80 ($12) on his cellphone, but in the store they sold for half the price. I did not really want to carry a rolled-up map around all day, but at the end he did accept my final offer at $3, so I ended up with my second China wallmap.

Next stop: Yide Lu (One Virtue Street). According to Andrew, the one virtue here is “making money”. This district is known for its toy market (hundreds of stores with pens, decorations, Chinese lanterns, key rings, flags, costumes, masks, etc.) and its exotic foods market. Marioka found a shawl in her favorite colors, and I tried to bargain a Chinese flag down. Next, we went in search of real coffee. Eventually we found a pound of Arabian blend coffee from Vietnam. Jesse later bought coffee beans and a hand grinder.

After our coffee hunt was successful, we stared at the roasts, dried fish and other seafood, and other exotica. For lunch we ate dumplings (Qiao-zi) and micro-pancakes. At one shop we finally found Dutch cheese: a whole wheel of Gouda cheese, made in Drachten! Wow, that’s my home town in Holland, where my parents live and my grandparents were buried. There was no haggling over the price of cheese, and 4.5 kilogram was too much for our fridge, Marioka decided. Further down the street we bought a 1.8 kg Edam ball, also from Kroon BV in Drachten. Wow, we now eat real cheese for breakfast!

We stopped to take some pictures at the majestic, yet sober Roman Catholic cathedral of Guangzhou, in the middle of the exotic food shopping street. Apparently, it draws a crowd for Sunday mass. Our colleague Dominique from the Philippines plays music in its services. He is a fine fellow.

We had agreed with two female colleagues, who have joined our “group” to meet them at the Italian restaurant for its famous buffet that night. As we had some time to spend, we walked to historic Shamian Island, where we (again) drank BC Blenz coffee. Apparently many baby-adopters from the west come here, so many shops have baby clothes on display by their doors. I found the best music/DVD store to date, with an impressive collection of classical DVDs. I finally decided on a “Swinging Bach” DVD (concert in Germany) with 22 numbers from full concert to brass and jazz to King’s Singers; a beautiful album for five dollars. We have enjoyed it!

The Italian restaurant is near the Garden Hotel area; it is Guangzhou’s expat centre. Many other non-Chinese (like Nigerian businessmen) wander around here, and at one time I even thought I saw someone taller than 6’5”.

The pizza and lasagna were below standard and the onion soup was cold; the rest was actually good (and it was buffet). It was including all drinks, but very expensive: twelve dollars per person. Anyway, we had a good time together: two Dutch Canadians, a Dutch-American, another American, another Canadian, a German, a South African, and his Chinese wife.

Tuesday night: supper at the home of our Chinese friends, right next to the Pearl River.

Pictures include: a nightly stroll along the Pearl, and: feasting on chicken feet!

Thursday we had planned to spend the day with our Daliang “Family”, but somehow that did not work out. So, we talked to Andrew and decided to visit nearby DaFuShan (Granddaddy) Forest Park. On Google Earth I had discovered this area, which is right between BiGui Yuan (Country Garden) and Clifford Estates. It seemed like a nice park. Andrew was all in favor.

So, we took the shuttle bus to the front gate, and as usual taxi drivers immediately approached us. We agreed on a generous fare of 3 dollars, and we were dropped off at the north gate bicycle rentals. Of course it was holidays, and it was already crowded. The best (and tallest) bicycles were already rented out, but eventually we figured out the system: 15 dollars deposit and a daily rental fee of $0.80 per bicycle.

Well, the bikes were tiny, the roadway crowded, the path steep at times, and the brakes unreliable, but we had fun. Two times we walked around for a while, and we discovered that the narrow paths were not well traveled, despite the crowded pavement. At the yacht rental (actually paddleboats) we had a drink or ice cream, before we pedaled back to the north gate. We got our own bills back (numbers were recorded on slip), and we paid our dues.

Across the street, Andrew got ripped off buying a cooked sweet potato; we did not buy sugar cane for munching on. We walked through a shopping street and bought some tea at one of the many tea shoppes. Actually, Andrew and Marioka drank cold coconut milk, while I had cold but invigorating sweetwood tea. Across the road we actually found a real coffee place, selling beans, grinders, and even green beans (but we have not seen a popcorn popper to roast them like we do at (the other) home.)

It took a little while to find a taxi to bring us to the east gate of BiGui Yuan. Since we had not eaten much, while we used quite some cycling energy, we decided to have an early supper in SanGui town. It had been a while ago that we visited the desert place, so we all agreed to go there. Well, we feasted on Indonesian food, like nasi goreng, sateh, lumpia, local Pearl River beer, and ice cream with pineapple; we probably spent some seven dollars together (Andrew paid the bill). After a bit of shopping (DVD for $1.50, Brandy for $1.75 and ice wine for future celebration at $3), we went home. It was time for a shower and a nap. We spent the night reading missionary stories about the Lisu tribe in Yunnan province (which we hope to visit in February).
------------------------------------------------------------------

11/12 Avonturen in onze Chinese Vakantieweek (dubbeleditie!)

Wellicht konden we daar fietsen huren.

(Marjoke)

Yesterday we again took the bus to Guangzhou.

We wanted to see Shamian Island. It is close to down town Guangzhou and was not much more than a sandbank in the Pearl River when it was after the Opium Wars given as concession to foreigners to set up their warehouses.

---

It has a bit of a European flavor with two church buildings on it: A British one on the one side and a French R.C. Church on the other side of the island. Both relatively small churches were built in the second half of the 19th century. There are also many other older colonial style buildings, many of them have now been renovated and made into restaurants and such. Traffic is restricted and there are parks. You can stroll on the quay and imagine your self in Rotterdam. (I like the many rivers here. We live in the Pearl River delta). It makes me feel at home as a born Rotterdammer)

---

Lots of benches to sit on and look over the water, but none empty. Some ladies make their seat in the grass by sitting on newspaper. Little groups of middle-aged Chinese tourists play games with something like a combination of a hacky sack and a birdie. It is played with the heels to keep it in the air. Even ladies in skirts play along.

---

We also treated ourselves to a Canadian cup of coffee. Blenz has a coffee shop here.

(Here we learned something about Canada. You guessed, we are no British Columbians!) There is also a Starbucks' close by.

---

In the middle of the island there is mostly park between houses with lots of trees and people playing badminton or sitting around or having wedding pictures taken. We came across four of such couples. The trees are beautiful. Most were Ficus microcarpa, with long roots on the sides intermingling with the trunk. (Fortunately they had a sign with the name on it, because we have yet to find a tree and shrub flora.)

There were also some touristy little stores. We asked for some picture postcard and yes, the lady had some. They looked somewhat old; we had to practice our first haggling game since western people trigger the price to be at least twice as much. At another table a guy was making ink pictures mainly with his nails (flat part) and hand. We enjoyed our stay there and maybe we will even get back on a Sunday to hear an English “message”.

---

You have crowds of people surrounding you, but their chatter are perceived like foreign chatter. In little baby steps we learn to recognize a few expressions and characters, but so much remains shrouded in mystery. It has something invigorating, yet -at times- unsettling. And you are bound to make mistakes, even blunders.

Heather Liang is the assistant of the school's foreign affairs office. She told us I needed a passbook (bank) account beside the account we just opened the previous day. To help us, she wrote in Chinese characters something like, “please help this teacher to open passbook account”. Yet, we also had to travel to the big city to get money from our (Canadian) account as the full year's fee for our d.s.l. internet connection had to paid up front.

Well, we got on the right bus, we got off at the right spot, we even managed to take the metro. After walking around for an hour, trying to find a MC affiliated bank with ATM, we found three of them in a row. When we arrived back at the bus stop (across the street), we did not know exactly where our bus would come or at what time. Every minute a bus stopped, but it could be anywhere along a 100-metre-plus strip of sidewalk, and our bus had no sign. Heather had been afraid we might not find our way back, so she wrote our full address (in Chinese characters) to show in case of need.

So, after observing this flow of buses, I decided to ask a senior guard. I showed him the Chinese characters. He indicated I was wrong. He took the time to walk with me for half a block and then into an open building. At least fifty people were waiting there; perhaps it was a waiting room and ticket purchase place! He went to the wicket and demanded service for the hapless strangers. I tried to communicate we did not need tickets. And then it dawned on me: it was a bank! OOPS!

The worst was not that I had lost face, but I had made this helpful senior lose face. I tried to remember what sorry was in Chinese.

Five minutes before the bus came, he sent a junior colleague to show us where we had to stand. We got on the right bus and even recognized a colleague on board.

The community shuttle buses are usually full, so many have to stand. This is not easy for tall people, for the ceiling is too low to stand up straight. It's I believe not good for my bad back.

Yet, even if you have a seat, especially in the back, the bumps can be rough. There are speed bumps and there is the river dike. Some bus drivers just keep going full speed. I learned quick: as soon as there is a bad bump and I am lifted from my seat, I tense my leg muscles and push against the seat's back. At the river dike, however, there was a sick snapping sound from my seat after the bump. My back was OK, but the seat felt a bit loose. I looked down and noticed that the front rivets or bolts were pulled out of the floor! If I knew how to communicate this clearly in Cantonese to our bus driver, I probably would have done so. Sorry.

Our little corner store sells all kinds of stuff. I like the cold beer; 40 cents for a double-sized bottle. I also like the peanuts-in-shell. Last week I discovered they even have a nicely flavored kind, kind of a BBQ-flavored peanut-in-the-shell. They sell it bulk, by weight. I asked them yesterday; a 5 kg bag would cost about 7 dollars.

We often buy some fresh veggies there and eggs. I noticed they also had bluish eggs. They looked like duck eggs, so yesterday I suggested to Marioka we should try those. When she opened one, it appeared to be a bad one: it was a dark, bloody gelly mess. When she dumped it in the bowl, we saw it was a birdy embryo: it could have been a duckling. I decided I would not eat it. Apparently, bird embryos is a delicacy in The Philippines.

When we ate at the cheap restaurant a Chinese guy at our table ordered and ate songbird eggs as snack. No wonder that, in spite of all the lush plant growth, there is no abundant bird life here!

I did not even eat the bird, but this morning I had the runs…

-------------------------------------

Het spijt me!

Photos 2

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; Security is provided by an army of uniformed (young) men. Most of them stand around little booths. Cleanliness is provided by an army of straw-hatted (older) women, armed with brooms. I think these armies live outside the community and get a very small wage (by Western standards).

Inside the community we find apartment buildings and homes with small but elaborately landscaped gardens. The subtropical vegetation is breathtaking. Palm trees are very common, and flowering shrubs come in a large variety.

In the morning we like to stroll along these gardens to the river where older people like to do their exercises.

The community has two club buildings. They have a store, restaurant, and entertainment opportunities such as tennis and swimming. The entrances are very showy and elaborate, and the whole atmosphere reminds us of the British clubs of the colonial era. Perhaps they were introduced here via Hong Kong.

We like to shop at the market store. They have a good variety of groceries, fresh vegetables and fruits, and live fish, turtles, eel, or poultry, which can be processed on the spot.

Most products are fairly easily recognized, although most packages have labels in Chinese only. Non-western products are fairly cheap; alcoholic beverages are inexpensive. For less than half a dollar I can get a double-sized bottle of locally brewed lager beer.

Our apartment is adequate and nice. A modern air conditioning unit is in the bedroom. We turn it on later in the afternoon (at 26 0C.), when we use a purchased fan to blow it into the living room. At night we close the bedroom door and allow the rest of our apartment to warm up. It gets dark around 7 p.m. and the sun rises at about 6 p.m. As we are still adjusting, we generally go to bed and rise about an hour after sunset and sunrise. I love the shower; it is more convenient than our own.

We live on the third floor. Our little balcony looks upon a fairly narrow street, lined with beautiful trees, which are 3-4 stories tall.

Just around the corner of our apartment is a corner store where we get our most common groceries and consumables, such as rice, vegetables, peanuts, beer, tea, noodles, toilet paper, and an occasional ice cream cone.

------------------

Journey Through the Night / Reis door de Nacht

Journey Through the Night

departure: 11:40 Wednesday night, Toronto International Airport
When our Cathay Pacific plane took off with 90% or more Oriental passengers, I found it hard to believe we were still in Canada.

The first leg of the journey was to Anchorage, Alaska, USA.
